The religious counsel gave political overtones to their accusations to Jesus.

Luke 23:2 - And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

Pilate learned that Jesus was a Galilean so he sent him to Herod.

Pilate appealed to the Judeans three separate times.

Matt 27:17 - Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

Mark 15:14 - Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

Luke 23:14 - Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

John 18:37 - Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

Jesus defense - he was looking into the future Kingdom of Heaven, his glory at the millennium reign of Christ.

Matt 27:27 - Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

After the sentencing, Jesus was beaten and tortured by Pilate’s soldiers at the Fort Antonia next to the Temple.
